VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps will try to continue their winning ways against some familiar foes Saturday. The Caps will face former defender Alain Rochat and midfielder John Thorrington as they visit D.C. United in Washington. Of the two, Rochat is expected to play a more prominent role as he tries to curb Vancouvers potent offence after being traded unexpectedly for a pair of draft picks in early June. "(Rochat) brought the same thing here that he brings to D.C. -- obviously his presence as a veteran and his ability to get forward and his ability to defend," said Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton. "Im sure they enjoy having him, and itll be good to see him." Thorrington, a steady performer who has battled injuries, made 35 appearances for Vancouver between 2011 and 2012 before being waived in the off-season. The Whitecaps (6-5-4) are looking to win their third straight game and fifth in the past seven. United is in last place overall with a 2-11-3 mark, but is coming off a win over San Jose. Vancouver has scored 11 goals in its past four games, but the Whitecaps need to shore up their goals-against record. They have allowed 24 goals -- the fourth-highest total in the league. "Were obviously scoring goals at a premium right now, which is great for us," said Knighton. "We just need to be sound defensively, and the wins will keep coming." Currently fifth in the Western Conference, the Whitecaps have a chance to move ahead of four-place Los Angeles, pending the Galaxys result Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. Vancouver coach Martin Rennie said his charges have to balance their offensive prowess with better defence as they attempt to move up the table. While winning their last two games against New England and Chivas USA, the Whitecaps had to overcome deficits. "Weve been scoring a lot of goals," said Rennie. "So we need to make sure that we keep attacking teams and making sure that were creating chances. "I think that, as a team, we generally need to defend better, although against Chivas, they didnt really have too many chances. We limited their opportunities. So we need to do that well in the next game." The Whitecaps are surging after struggling early in the season. Rennie said another victory will do a lot for the teams morale as the organization, in its third MLS season, strives to become one of the leagues top clubs. "Confidence is hard to build, and were still working hard to build that," said Rennie. "As a team in general, were still a new team trying to create a positive culture, and I think these little steps do make a difference. Every time you get a win and go on a winning run and show good form, that always builds confidence. "Its such a tight league, Major League Soccer, so if we can go on a run and keep doing well, then we can move up the league fairly quickly." The Whitecaps will return to action following a 10-day break that has allowed some injured players to mend. Midfielder Gershon Koffie (thigh) and Brad Rusin (calf) are healthy again after they both missed the past four games. "Im looking forward to getting out there, scoring goals and, hopefully, getting a clean sheet," said Rusin, who is slated to play a holding midfield role instead of his usual central defender spot. Johnny Leveron and Carlyle Mitchell will continue in the centre back spots, while Nigel Reo-Coker, usually a midfielder, is slated to shift to right fullback, a position that he has played occasionally in the English Premier League and in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship against Montreal this season. He is making the move because veteran Young-Pyo Lee, 36, is being rested back in Vancouver. The game is the first of two straight on the road for the Whitecaps, who conclude their trip Wednesday in Kansas City. Notes: Whitecaps midfielder Russell Teibert of Niagara Falls, Ont., is slated to join Canadas entry in the upcoming Gold Cup after the game. Vancouvers fourth goalkeeper, Simon Thomas of Victoria, has also been called up to the national squad. ... Mitchell will also leave the Caps after the game to play for Trinidad & Tobago in the same tournament. ... Lee appears unlikely to join the Caps in Kansas City. He negotiated breaks from Eastern trips when he agreed to come back for what is expected to be his final season before retirement. ... Vancouver central defender Andy OBrien remains out with a hamstring injury. ... D.C. and the Whitecaps are 1-1-1 against each other in three MLS meetings. ... Kyle Porter, a former Whitecaps residency player who left the team in 2010, will also dress for the hosts. Mikko Rantanen Jersey . -- New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has no concerns about the health of shortstop Derek Jeter, who was limited to 17 games last season due to leg injuries. Lanny McDonald Jersey . Kelli Stack and Alex Carpenter also scored for the Americans, who avoided a repeat of Finlands upset at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., in November. Finnish goalie Noora Raty made 58 saves in that one, but the three-time Olympian could stop just 40 of 43 U. http://www.hockeyavalancheteamshop.com/Colorado-Sven-Andrighetto-Adidas-Jer…. The top-ranked Djokovic also beat Gael Monfils and then routed Roger Federer en route to his first Abu Dhabi title. "Its always great to win a title. This is the best way to start the 2012 season," Djokovic said. John Wensink Jersey . The Raptors second-year forward has been one of the primary beneficiaries of the early-season trade, breaking out and becoming a vital part of his teams success on both ends of the floor. Around the league, teams are starting to take notice and feature Ross more predominately in their pre-game scouting reports but its not just the opposition that hes impressing. Nathan MacKinnon Jersey .Cameron sustained his third concussion in three seasons last week on a hit by Oakland safety Brandion Ross, who was fined $22,050 by the NFL for the helmet-to-helmet blow.SCHLADMING, Austria - Alexander Khoroshilov won a night slalom by a huge margin on Tuesday, the first Russian World Cup victory in more than three decades.Khoroshilov built on his commanding first-run lead to finish in a total time of 1 minute, 46.39 seconds, 1.44 ahead of second-place Stefano Gross of Italy, who had his maiden win two weeks ago in Addelboden, Switzerland. It was a surprise for me, said the 30-year-old Khoroshilov, who earned his first World Cup podium last month. Russias last victory came from Alexander Zhirov in a giant slalom in 1981.Felix Neureuther of Germany came 1.51 behind in third and extended his lead in the discipline standings while setting a personal best by reaching his seventh podium of the season.Torontos Phil Brown did not qualify for the second run.Neureuther has 540 points, 66 clear of Marcel Hirscher. The Austrian three-time overall champion, who was fourth after the opening run, dropped to 14th after a wild second run.I had two good runs, and I had a really good feeling and then you can ski fast, said Khoroshilov, adding he didnt feel pressure going into the second run. Maybe last year I would have been nervous but not anymore. The Russian became the third slalom skier to earn his maiden win this season after Gross and Mattias Hargin, who won in Kitzbuehel two days ago.Khoroshilov drew praise from his rivals, with Hirscher calling the Russians performance just sensational.Neureuther said it was fantastic how he raced after leading a slalom for the first time. That was superior, and Gross added that Khoroshilov had a super race.Khoroshilov was one of Russias main medal hopes in Alpine skiing for the Sochi Games last year. He didnt fully live up to expectations as he finished 14th, sstill his best Olympic result.ddddddddddddA year on, he is having a breakthrough season as one of the most consistent slalom skiers, finishing every race in the top 10.After coming third in Are, Sweden, he followed up with fifth places in Zagreb, Croatia, and Wengen, Switzerland.Tuesdays slalom was the final World Cup race before the world championships start in Beaver Creek next week.Heavy snowfall made racing difficult as the icy surface got covered by fresh powder. Visibility was limited and many racers wiped their goggles immediately after finishing.A day after skipping training and the public bib draw as he felt exhausted, Hirscher didnt look his usual self with an uncharacteristic final run. That was just bad skiing, said the Austrian, who extended his lead in the overall standings. Hirscher has 1,014 points, 180 ahead of Norways Kjetil Jansrud, who doesnt compete in slalom.Hirscher was just one of many of the pre-race favourites who struggled with the conditions.Last years winner Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway came more than two seconds behind in seventh, while Alexis Pinturault of France was 2.85 back in 17th.Will Brandenburg and David Chodounsky were the only Americans who qualified for the final run, and they finished 18th and 19th, respectively.Teammate Ted Ligety skipped the race. He travelled back to the U.S. to prepare for the world championships following a disappointing weekend in Kitzbuehel, where he failed to finish the super-G and was disqualified in the slalom.Ligety is the defending champion in three events at the worlds — super-G, combined and giant slalom. The World Cup season includes two more slaloms after the worlds — in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and Meribel, France, in March.
